UED 102 UiTM PAHANG KAMPUS JENGKA 2019

Hello everyone! for our beginning,i want to introduce myself .As the saying goes,do not know then do not love.My name is Nurkhalisa binti Zulkifli. I am a student from UiTM Pahang,Campus Jengka.Actually,UiTM was my first choice in university application after i finish high school at Rawang,Selangor.

UED 102 STUDY SKILLS
So,we have 7 topics about study skills and we learn them in 4 weeks.
The topics is:
1.GETTING READY TO LEARN
2.GOAL SETTING
3.TIME MANAGEMENT
4.GETTING TO KNOW THE CAMPUS
5.MEMORY,LEARNING&IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
6.TAKING LECTURE NOTES
7.ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE

So,i will explain step by step about this study skills.
I will start with our first topic:

MODULE 1:

by:Dr. Zul Adlan bin Mohd Hir
GETTING READY TO LEARN
MAKING THE TRANSITION(FROM SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY)
For anyone who are first time step into the university environment,it will be a difficult situation for them because the school environment is very different than university.Although this differences will make us to be a mature person.

LEARNING STYLES..

In study we have 3 learning styles that is:
  1. audio
  2. visual
  3. kinaesthetic
AUDIO
-mostly use hearing such as oral presentations or listen video.
VISUAL
-more interested in learning when learning in the form of articles, illustrations, pictures and other like them.
KINAESTHETIC
-prefer to study in movement learning such as gallery walk, role-playing etc.

LEARNING STYLES INVENTORY

ACTIVITY 1

πŸ‘‰Every person have their own learning style.Someone like to learn by reading or listening because for them it will make them more understand about that topic.
MY LEARNING STYLES..
πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ“šπŸ“š
based on the learning styles inventory,i have scored 9 over 10 in visual style. While in auditory and kinesthetic styles,i have scored 7 and 6.
So,that means i am visual learner.I need to see information for my study so i can be more focus.
It also means i have strong visualization skills and can remember objects, shapes, and pictures.I learn by reading, and by watching films, videos, and demonstrations.I can see pictures in my mind.

Besides that,
Auditory learners need to hear information. If they preferred style is auditory, they have a "good car" and can hear differences in tones and rhythm.Reading out loud will be beneficial. They can remember and focus what they hear in a lecture.

Kinesthetic learners need to be physically active and doing things. If they preffered style is kinesthetic, they are a hands-on learner.they have good coordination and learn by doing. They generally have an active approach to learning.

8 STEPS TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • attend all classes
  • become an active learner
  • participate in class
  • get to know your lecturers
  • forms study groups with friends
  • stay up to date with your work
  • be receptive to change
  • work hard every semester
I will explain a little bit about these steps:

attend all classes

you will get many benefits by attend all classes. You can be more understand in lecture because you will get the information directly from your lecturer. If you don't understand the lecture, you can ask your lecturer directly with the right answers.so,you can save time without thinking about the confusion in the lesson.

become an active learner

to be a success student, you must to know very well in subject and score at all about lessons. So,you must to have a long-term memory to keep all information. It depends on the person remembering or memorizing and understanding the lesson. Some person need to write and recite the information to get it into long-term memory.while the others need to read at many times to get it into long-term memory.

participate in class

avoid being passive in class because it will make you tired of hearing lectures and eventually push you to sleep. To avoid it,you must set a goal to either ask or answer the question during each class.
It will makes you enjoy the lecture and also make your lecturer to be more excited to teach you.

get to know your lecturers

take a few minutes to know your performance in learning by asking the lecturer about your shortcomings or misunderstandings in lecture.By using this step, you can improve your study skills and performance in lessons.Besides that, your lecturers will care more about you and will guide you in lesson.

form study groups with friends

some people like study in group while other cannot and doesn't like in study group because it will make them uncomfortable. Its depends on people.Study group will be effective if the members in that group always contribute and helping each other. In this step, student will better understand the lesson if they always use the concept teach and learn in their group.although, can increased knowledge by discussion.

stay up to date with your work

you need to be smart in managing your time so that you can review the lessons and complete the assignments you are given at the same time.In this case, you must avoid delaying work because if a lot of work is delayed, then you will use a long time to complete all the work in the near future.

be receptive to change

be ready to change your strategies if that doesn't work to you in university era.Sometimes it may not be due to a different environment. So,you need to ask your lecturer or senior how to learn in the best ways at the college. At the first time, you will be awkward but you will okay if you have positive thinking.

work hard this semester

use your break time to do your work such as assignments.don't ever waste your time to useless thing.you must always wake up early in the morning to study because this time is the great time to study and you will easily understand at the subject.

MODULE 2:

TIME MANAGEMENT &ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

Definition of Time:
  • Noun-the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future.
  • Verb-plan,schedule,or arrange when (something) should happen or be done
Definition of Time Management
  • the ability to use one's time effectively or productively, especially at work.
In Islam, his followers are taught to care about his age, youth, wealth and knowledge because they will all be questioned by God in the hereafter.

5 STRATEGIES (STUDY SYSTEM)

  1. weekly schedule
  2. daily planner
  3. semester calendar
  4. academic vs personal life
  5. AVOID PROCRASTINATION

πŸ”Ž❗❗PROCRASTINATION?
  • procrastination is the act of putting off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.
  • in other words, like to do work at the last minute
  • synonymous with postpone or delay a certain activity or task.
  • SOURCE OF GREAT STRESS and ANXIETY for many people
there are many reasons for the question "why some person like procrastination"?
the REASON is:

  • perfectionist
  • avoid failure
  • avoid success
  • being rebellious
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • lazy
REMEDY that you should try when procrastination take control is:

  • go back to your goal(wake up from laziness and focus to your aim)
  • alert to deadline(hardworking in doing assignment and showing a good job)
  • prioritized(set up in your mind that assignment or homework is the best way to aim your goal)
  • self rewards(treat yourself like a winner when you have done your work)

ADVANTAGE OF BEING ORGANIZED

😎keep on schedule and meet deadline
😣reduce stress-we in control
😌complete work without stress
πŸ˜€build your confidence
*IF YOU FOCUS ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING,AND MANAGE YOUR TIME CAREFULLY,YOU WILL BE CHILL IN YOUR WORK.
$NO WORRY,NO STRESS,NO JUMPING FROM LEVEL 20
🚨🚨 BUT YOU MUST STRUGGLE IN THAT WORK AND DON'T DO IT IN THE AIR

HOW TO MANAGE TIME?

Actually it depends on you BUT today, many advanced technologies have been invented to facilitate humans being. One of them is smartphones. In smartphones have ALARMS,CALENDARS,REMINDERS AND NOTES installed. All of them are using for time management tools.

MEMORY,IMPROVING CONCENTRATION & READING SYSTEM

ACTIVITY 5

"REMEMBERING IS HARD WORK, AND MEMORY TECHNIQUES DO NOT NECESSARILY MAKE IT EASY, THEY JUST MAKE IT MORE EFFECTIVE."
                                      -KENNETH L.H.,1996-

So,methods of training and retention rates can be divided into 7 sections:

  1. LECTURE
  2. READING
  3. AUDIOVISUAL
  4. DEMONSTRATION
  5. DISCUSSION
  6. PRACTICE DOING
  7. TEACH OTHERS

we can see how the concept of 'teach others' can impact 90% of effective learning sessions. It because when student try teach others, first they know and understand what they want to teach. Then, they will recall their learning memory and remember that lessons. After that, they will become aware of the topic.
INDIRECTLY,STUDENTS HAVE PRACTICED THREE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LEARNING.they are,REPEAT,RECALL and  UNDERSTAND

MEMORY PROCESSES

                          MEMORY               VS                       BRAIN

The retention of information                             Is the organ, like computer hardware.
over time(Santrock, 2011)
or the mind stores and remember
information(mental processes/
cognition),like computer software.

WHEN WE LEARN, AND REMEMBER, WE WILL ENCODE, STORE, AND RETRIEVE THE INFORMATION.THE ANALOGY IS LIKE A COMPUTER.

So,imagine a human memory system is just like a computer memory system.

THE STORAGE (RETAIN INFORMATION)
ACTIVITY 6

MEMORY STRATEGIES

πŸ˜†Memory strategies will help students in their Encoding, Storing, and Retrieving the information (help to Remember and Recall).

How to memorize can sometimes depends on someone. Some people can memorize by using songs and beats. Some people find it easier to remember to use formulas.

HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR?

  • Did not pay ATTENTION to the information.
  • Did not UNDERSTAND the information.
  • CRAMMING(last minute study)
  • Did not have GOOD STRATEGIES.
  • INTERFERENCE(having 2 exams on the same day especially if the subjects are closely related for example Psychology and counselling).
  • TEST ANXIETY(negative thoughts about oneself, did not prepare well for the test).

ACTIVITY 7

 IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

WHAT IS CONCENTRATION?
  • Focusing your attention on what you are doing.
CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION:
  • Lack of ATTENTION
  • Lack of INTEREST
  • Lack of MOTIVATION
  • Distraction from others
  • Uncomfortable ENVIRONMENT
  • PHYSIOLOGICAL matters-illness,tiredness
  • PHYSIOLOGICAL matters-personal problems, worries, anxieties
STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING CONCENTRATION:

  • Motivational and organizational strategies,examples:
                     -interest in the work
-develop a positive attitude toward you work
                     -apply your goal setting
                     -apply time management strategies

  • Positive learning  environment
              -find a better location
              -reduce multitasking
              -minimize distractions

  • Deal with internal distractions
                    -deal with personal problems
                    -deal with competing activities

  • Use active learning strategies
             -discussed in improving memory

  • Match your learning style to the task
-it depends on your learning style either Audio, Visual, Kinesthetic,
  • Monitor your concentration
                 -Focus and understand the information

ACTIVITY 8

READING/STUDY SYSTEM(SQ3R)

Three important factors in the study system that help to understand academic reading materials is :
  1. Active learning strategies
  2. Use of multisensory methods
  3. Immediate steps for self-testing and review

S Q 3 R

SURVEY
QUESTION
3R:
  1. READ
  2. RECITE
  3. REVIEW

SURVEY

Know the subtopic, title, chapter as your guard line in learning.

QUESTION

Make a summary from your reading and then ask some questions to yourself by using 5W 1H (who, what, where, when, why, how)

READING

Read the information carefully and understand it.

RECITE

Make a short note or summary based on your understanding.

REVIEW

Test yourself by doing question and answer them.Use the space time to get long-term memory. But if you cannot recall them, go back and find the answers.

ACTIVITY 9

MODULE 6:

by:Mohamad Azam Akmal bin Abu Bakar
TAKING LECTURE NOTES

  • Definition of note taking is writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words.
  • The weapons needed when note taking is:
                                                                            -PEN
                                                                            -HIGHLIGHT PEN
                                                                            -STICKY NOTES
                                                                            -the other stationery

  • Take lecture notes is very IMPORTANT because:
                                           πŸ§  1.Improve our memories
πŸ˜Ž 2.Helps us take ownership of our own words and ideas
πŸ‘‚ 3.Promote active listening by paying attention to lecture
πŸ•΅ 4.Helps us to engage more on our senses
πŸ“š  5.Helps us organize the information
⏰  6.Time saving because we can use the notes to study for
                                                   quiz,tests,final exam

  • How to take notes effectively:
                                       >SPACE =Have some space to write either side part of book or
                                                        the bottom of book.
                                       >DATE=Write your date before start take notes(make easy to                                                               check up the notes that without title)
                                       >LABEL=Label your notes
                                       >ABBREVIATIONS=Use abbreviations and symbol to save space
                                                                         (short form)
                                       >OUTLINE=Outline your main ideas and example(better using                                                                   pen colour or highlight)
                                       >LANGUAGE=Use our own language and words.it will make you
more understand and easily memorize it.
WHILE TAKING NOTES

  • Be an aggressive, not a passive, listener
  • Ask questions and discuss if its permitted
  • If not, hot question in your notes
  • Seek out meaning

8 WAYS TO TAKE BETTER LECTURE NOTES

1.write down the important words to save time and make you catch up the lecture.

2.If you're a slow writer, just make them easy by using a handphone or dictaphone to record the lecture.

3.Pay attention.Make sure take a breakfast in the morning for energy to avoid drowsiness.

4.Highlight,Underline and Capitalise the more important thing to put more emphasis.

5.Get rid of distractions.Turn off the internet data or turn your handphone into silent mode or vibrate mode.

6.Leave gap.sometimes the lecture is too fast to catch up the information. so, just leave a gap so you can add the information later.

7.Share.sharing is caring so,why not you help anyone who need your help in learning. For example sharing your lecture notes.

8.Make yourself comfortable. You have learn in your own style.

How Do You Prepare For Class?

Observe your Lecturer

  • WATCH THE BOARD OR OVERHEAD PROJECTOR
-take note what the important point or information given.
  • LET GO OF JUDGMENTS ABOUT LECTURE STYLES
-don't let your attitude about a lecturer's style get in the way of your education

  • BE ALERT TO REPETITION
-sometimes student not focus to the lecture. So,lecturer will repeat the important point to tell the students that is more important and must be pay attention on it.

  • NOTICE THE LECTURER'S INTEREST LEVEL
-if the lecturer is excited about something,it is likely to be on an exam

TIPS TO HELP YOU WHEN YOUR LECTURER ISN'T TOO INTERESTING

  1. pay attention to the act of writing.
  2. ask questions-some of classmates want to ask the question but afraid or think the question is just a simple question. So,you must raise your hand and ask that question. It will make the good environment.
  3. volunteer for demonstrations and discussions.
  4. sit in the front of the room

  • one of the secrets to success in learning is sit close to the front because:
-it is harder to fall asleep
-the board is easier to read
-the lecturer can see you more easily
-declaring your willingness to take risk and participate
*you must be a hero in this situation.
*do not make"lecturers less attractive"as the reason you are not successful in your studies.

BENEFITS OF REVIEW LECTURE NOTES

  1. We lose 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within a few hours
  2. Identify any questions with classmates, the next class to ask the lecturer
  3. There is not enough time to absorb all the information given in class if it's not reviewed on a regular basis.
  4. Be ready to the surprise test.Avoid cramming.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is an act of copying another person's work without the consent of the original author or without writing the source of the reference and thereby recognizing the work as his own work.

Characteristics of the plagiarism:
  • turning in someone else's work as your own
  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentences structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not
Preventing Plagiarism

CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE

All students must be alert with their GPA and CGPA after got their result in final examination in every semester. It is very important for them because it is evidence of academic achievement.

What is GPA and CGPA?
GPA is the short form for Grade Point Average.
CGPA is the short form for Cumulative Grade Point Average.

HOW TO CALCULATE GPA AND CGPA

GPA=The total credit values and attempted in the assessment of a semester
The total credit units acquired in the same semester

To find GPA weighted by credit hours, follow these steps:
1. multiply each numeric grade value by the number of credits the course
2.add these numbers together
3.divide by the total number of credits you took
4.you will get your GPA.
CGPA= The total credit values registered and attempted in the assessment of all semesters
The total credit units acquired in all semesters

FAILURE AND DISMISSAL

poor performance in the course will result in the student being categorized into a dismissal status.
